Medical Council of New Zealand Interview

Process for Registration
You must attend a registration interview before you start work.

Important information:

  • Notarised copies of documents are not acceptable. Please do not bring these to your interview.
  • Original and correct documents must be provided, as your registration will not proceed without them.

Please use the following checklist to ensure that you bring the necessary documents to your interview:

Your current passport (so that you can be identified).
*Either a certificate of good standing or a licensure verification document issued by the registration authority in the country or state where you most recently worked as a medical practitioner.
Important information:
  • This document must be issued during the three months before you start work in New Zealand. It must confirm your current registration status and your ‘standing’ with your registration authority.
  • A registration certificate is not acceptable.
Your original primary medical degree and postgraduate medical qualification certificates. If you are unable to supply the original of your medical degree certificate(s), you must supply an original letter from your medical university confirming that you completed the medical degree course and that your degree has been conferred on you.
Your original United States Medical Licensing (USMLE) score reports (not relevant if evidence of completion not requested for initial application)
Original documentation as evidence of a change of name (if relevant).
*Photocopies of your medical qualifications, USMLE score reports, the personal details pages of your passport, and evidence of change of name (if relevant) which will be certified by the Council agent.
*A copy of your letter of appointment.
Telephone numbers and or email where you can be contacted if necessary following your interview.
An original English translation of any documents if they are issued in a language other than English (the translation must be by an authorised translation service or professional translator).

At your MCNZ interview you will be required to complete an application form RGA2.2, which is used to confirm your identity and practice plans.

If there is any concern raised after your interview regarding your ability to communicate effectively in English, Council may withhold your registration for a period to enable your English to improve, and you may be asked to pass Council’s approved English examination (IELTS). For further IELTS information visit http://www.ielts.org

After the MCNZ interview you must send the completed application form RGA2.2, all the documents which are asterisked (*) in the above checklist, and the registration fee of NZ$360.00 payment for 6 months registration, to the Council office in Wellington (P O Box 11 649, Wellington). If you are not paying by credit card you will need to bring a bank draft, drawn on a New Zealand bank and in New Zealand dollars, with you to New Zealand. Your registration will not be processed until full payment is received with your application.

You must allow five working days from the date your application and fees have been received, for your registration certificate to be sent to the Consortium, who will hand it to you. You must not start work until advised by Council staff that you are authorised to do so.

The conditions of your registration will be noted on the certificate. You may not work outside these conditions. If you intend to change your place of employment you must contact the Council so that an application for a variation of your registration can be arranged. Temporary registration is available for up to two years in the first instance and may, at Council’s discretion, be extended for one further period of up to one year. You will find an application form for a variation of your registration on Council’s web site at www.mcnz.org.nz/about/forms/Rga2.1.1.PDF. If approved, an amended certificate will be issued.

You must hold a valid work permit to work in New Zealand. Please ensure that you obtain advice about the issue of a work permit from your closest New Zealand Immigration Service agency.
